Otsu-e, a folk painting that was born on the roads around Otsu Oiwake, a post town on the Tokaido, developed from the early Edo period onward, along with special products such as abacus and needles, and developed as souvenirs. At that time, there were about 40 shops of various types, and there were also “Otsu-e shops” scattered throughout the area. It was produced and sold by anonymous painters. Initially, it started with Buddhist paintings for the common people, and later, paintings of beautiful women and caricatures were added, and it spread across the country through the hands of travelers who bought it, developing into folk paintings that represent Japan.
